What is Periodontology?

Periodontology is the study of a specialized system of hard (bone) and soft tissue (gingiva) that supports the teeth and maintains its position in the maxilla and mandible (bones of the skull). This set of tissues is called periodontium and is composed of alveolar bone, root cement, periodontal ligament and gingiva. The teeth are inside the alveolar bone and are supported by the periodontal ligament that joins the cement that covers the root of the tooth.

Periodontal Diseases

Some of the causes of gingivitis, in addition to poor oral hygiene, are: smoking, diabetes, genetic predisposition, aging, drug abuse, some drugs, HIV infection, but pregnancy and puberty can also lead to gingivitis.

Among the diseases treated by periodontology, periodontitis is undoubtedly the most serious and the most dangerous, because it can easily progress over time and cause serious problems up to tooth loss and the origin of systemic diseases. The disease can also be caused by an excess of stones, dental interventions not carried out properly or as a result of other diseases such as smoking, diabetes, vitamin C deficiency, etc.
